Large DragonFly Oil Painting

Oil on Stretched Canvas
6' x 4'

As some of you know, I have been painting the Dragonfly for several years now.  Originally, I started painting small scale studies of these magical creatures with a focus on their colorful bodies.  But as time went on my attention shifted from the body to high lighting the wings --  the true essence of the dragonfly. And in doing so, the canvas size seem to grow as well.  As an artist, its been amazing to see the evolution, in my process, style, palette, size and composition.  It's been absolutely transforming.

I say this with much gratitude and surprise, that this IS by far my best painting ever!   Last year I was commissioned to create a site specific, large scale Dragonfly painting that had depth, meaning and symbolic references - significant to my client and the mystical reflection of the dragonfly.

The words are written backwards and reads as follows;

"The Dragonfly spirit is the essence of winds of change, the messages of wisdom and enlightenment: and the communication from the elemental world.  It's medicine beckons you to seek out the parts of  your habits which need changing.  Reminding you must consciously make an effort to express your hopes, dreams, needs and wishes.  You can turn to the dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation...."

Ocean Wave Oil Painting - Solitude

Oil on Canvas 4x12
I spent a lot of time over the last few months down at the Shore in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Most mornings I like to walk the beach before the crowds come in if I am able. It's so calm and peaceful then. This small painting is just a sampling of that solitude I like to submerge in....

Two Dog Portraits in Oil

KATIE (Yellow Lab) & MAGGIE (Chocolate Lab)
Sue and Pam are proud owners of Little Miss Katie and Sweet Maggie May.  I painted these two portraits of their beloved labs (Sisters) who passed away a few years ago.  I really enjoyed painting both dogs -- in particular their faces.  I found their eyes to be so expressive  like tiny windows to their personality and spirit.....

BLUE ILLUSIONS - Dragonfly - mixed media on paper - 8 x 10

Lately, I have been inspired to explore creative new ways to design the dragonfly.  In this piece, the meaning of Dragonfly is highlighted through the use of words, colors, transparencies and light.  This mixed media art was created using ink, acrylics and charcoal on paper.
The notes within the drawing are written partially in mirror image similar to how Da Vinci included notes in his art. It reads…
”Life is never quite the way it appears, but is always filled with light and color. Dragonfly can help you see through your illusions and thus allow your own light to shine forth. Dragonfly brings out brightness of transformation and the wonder of colorful new vision.”

Yellow Lab Oil Painting

Oil on Canvas

This was one of my most recent commissions of,  Little Katie. I was fortunate enough to have know this beautiful yellow lab which, made painting her a little bit easier. I purposely left a lot of space in the back ground to give it a contemporary feel.  One of my favorite parts of this painting are Katie's eyes, nose and mouth. My intent was to highlight her face since she was such an expressive dog!

Game Pieces #2 - Wooden Dice 1 4 3

6x6 Oil on Masonite

I ended up getting bit nostalgic as I painted these dice  thinking about playing this game when I was younger.  It was always with some kind of bet before anyone rolled the dice.   Whether it was something I  had to do or gamble with money - it always ended being good times spent with family and friends.  These dice are old wooden pieces that were painted or stained at one time.  Thanks for looking!  Contact me to purchase.

A few weeks ago I got together with some friends and had a wild night of playing Monopoly!   I noticed that the pieces to the game would make great little weekly paintings.  So I have decided to do a series of 100 game board pieces!  This should be fun and very challenging once I run out of painting all my favorite games....  If you are interested in purchasing click here...  Stay tuned for more!

Large Commission Sunrise Landscape

A  good friend of mine commissioned me to paint a large 2 panel piece painting for a particular area in his living room - specifically exhibiting the landscape that surrounds his house.   He lives north of Bath, PA near the Pocono Mountains.  Rick has been so wonderful to work with and he has given me creative freedom to design the painting as I wish -- for an artist that's a good thing!

On two separate occasions,  I ventured out to his neck of the woods to shoot this particular vantage point -- first time was in the evening at dusk and the second visit was early morning sunrise.   There is still more work that needs to be done in the foreground -- painting details of the cornfields and the road to the right.   Please stay tuned for more work and the completion of this huge painting!

Trip to Denver Colorado

Alyson B Stanfield & Dianna

I took a five day trip to Denver Colorado last week to reconnect with old friends and explore the Art Community in the City.  On my first day, I was fortunate enough to spend time gallery hopping with Alyson B. Stanfield - an Artist Advocate / Consultant and my Art Coach.  (for more info on Alyson visit her site ) What great company and perfect day for looking at art!

I just have to share briefly about two Gallery's we visited that had amazing work -- Walker Fine Art Gallery and Ice Cube Gallery.

At the Walker Gallery there were two Artists that stood out for me - Painter Udo Noger and Sculptor Kazu Obo.  They both work in different mediums -  pigment on paper and ceramic & wood sculpture.  I found that their work was complimentary to one another by the use of monochromatic colors and organic shapes found in both paintings a sculptures.  Beautiful art!

Udo Noger - pigment on paper.
There were 15-20 paintings from this artist.
All of them were painted with shades of White
Pigment and Charcoal.

Kazu Obo  - Wood

The second gallery we went to was Ice Cube.   The featured artist was Photographer Amber Fries.  Her work captures a space trapped in between worlds - distorted figures floating in water.  Pretty cool stuff!

Amber Fries - photograph

Just wanted to share these photos on my blog before I start painting today.  Thanks so much for looking!

Salt Marsh in Delaware small oil painting

6 x 6
Oil on panel

I did this little daily painting the day before I left to Denver, CO last week.  I was going through some of my digital photos of Wetlands that I shot this summer off the coast of Delaware.  This particular area was in the Gordon's Pond State Park near Rehoboth Beach.   It's a place where stunning views of  marshes and vanishing landscapes can been seen -- especially if it's a sunny day!
